A good week would have been enough time, the Ryzen 9 3950X as originally announced in September 2019 publish. But that does not matter because AMD has announcedthat the 16-core CPU will be moved to November. In the same month then also the thread ripper v3 (Castle Peak) come on the market, this had AMD already some time ago for autumn 2019 in view.
The Ryzen 9 3950X will be the top model in the series, but even the 12-core Ryzen 9 3900X (test) is hardly available yet. Contractor TSMC's 7 nm capacity may not be the primary reason for this, but much more the costly binning that selects high-frequency chips. The 3900X comes up to 4.6 GHz and for the 3950X AMD provides up to 4.7 GHz. However, this clock is to be understood as a limit and is only on light load.
To the Threadripper v3 there is hardly any official information, however, some details are leaked: According to Gamers Nexus, AMD plans for the socket TR4 with DDR4-3200 instead of DDR4-2933, the top model is again with a maximum of 32 cores, as from the Threadripper 2990WX ( Test) known, compete. Apparently, the thermal power loss increases from 250 watts to 280 watts. In addition to the TR4, there should be another Epyc spin-off for workstations, which has eight instead of four memory channels – so new boards needed – and could have up to 64 cores. AMD itself said today that the threadripper v3 will start in November with 24 cores.
Intel, meanwhile, has announced the Cascade Lake X for October: They follow the Skylake X refresh like the Core i9-9980XE, so it stays with up to 18 cores. First results in the Geekbench suggest that the Core i9-10980XE will clock at 3GHz up to 4.7GHz – a bit more than its predecessor.
