Climate Pledge Fund aims to support Paris climate protection agreement
Last year, Amazon and the Global Optimism organization jointly founded the Climate Pledge – a commitment to achieve the Paris Agreement ten years earlier and to be carbon neutral by 2040. Verizon, Reckitt Benckiser (RB) and Infosys have recently signed up to the promise, signaling an ever-increasing need for products and services to reduce CO2 emissions. Amazon’s Climate Pledge Fund will accelerate the development of innovations in favor of a future carbon-free economy.
Investments to protect the planet for future generations
“The Climate Pledge Fund aims to invest in visionary entrepreneurs and developers with products and services that help companies reduce their carbon footprint and act more sustainably,” said Jeff Bezos, founder and CEO of Amazon. “Companies from all over the world come into consideration, in all sizes and in every development phase – from start-ups with prototypes to firmly established companies. Every future investment is measured by its potential to accelerate the path to carbon neutrality and to help protect the planet for future generations. ”
Amazon takes the lead
The Climate Pledge Fund will invest in companies in a variety of industries, including transportation and logistics, energy generation, storage and use, manufacturing and materials, circular economy, and food and agriculture. Over time, Amazon will look for ways to involve other Climate Pledges signers in the venture investment program.
“Amazon has demonstrated its leadership in leveraging low-carbon technologies,” said R. J. Scaringe, founder and CEO of Rivian Automotive. “Your investment in Rivian and the following Order 100,000 electric vans will significantly reduce the carbon footprint of Amazon’s delivery network. We look forward to a future with CO2-neutral delivery offers. ”
The Climate Pledge Fund is one of many Amazon sustainability programs
Amazon recently published its 2019 sustainability report, which contains an update on the sustainability goals and programs of the retail and IT group:
- Amazon announced that it was on the right trackto work 100 percent with renewable energy by 2025 – five years earlier than previously planned. As part of the Climate Pledges, Amazon committed in 2019 to use 80 percent renewable energy by 2024 and 100 percent renewable energy by 2030.
- To date, Amazon has 91 renewable energy projects announced around the world. Together, these projects, with a total capacity of over 2,900 megawatts, will deliver more than 7.6 million megawatt hours of renewable energy annually – enough to power 680,000 U.S. households.
- Amazon has out of its $ 100 million Right Now Climate Fund launched two investments in near-natural solutions and reforestation projects around the world. Including a reforestation project in the Appalachian Mountains in the USA and a Urban greening program for urban greening in Berlin.
- Since 2015, Amazon has reduced the packaging weight of outbound deliveries by 33 percent and saved more than 880,000 tons of packaging material. This corresponds to 1.5 billion shipping boxes.
