Apple has sourced the first commercially available aluminum that has produced no carbon dioxide in its production. The metal was made by the joint venture Elysis and is expected to be delivered to Apple in December, according to the news agency Reuters reported. The aluminum is intended for the production of Apple hardware, in which product series it is used, was not communicated – also to the manufactured quantity there was no indication.
New aluminum production technology will arrive until 2024
Aluminum had been produced in the same way for over 130 years, Apple said, that would now change. Aluminum production typically uses a carbon material that releases significant amounts of greenhouse gas when burned.
In that Elysis method Instead, a conductive material should be used and thereby release only oxygen. If the process is "fully implemented and implemented," it has the potential to eliminate "direct greenhouse gas emissions from the smelting process," said the presentation of the new technology last year.
Behind the joint venture Elysis are the aluminum companies Alcoa and Rio Tinto. Apple has invested a good 8 million euros and brought together the companies by their own account to implement the project. Canada and the province of Quebec contribute nearly 40 million euros. The process should be commercialized by 2024 and eventually licensed. It was possible to retrofit existing smelters, like Elysis Reuters explained.
A lot of aluminum for Apple hardware
Apple relies on aluminum in almost all its products. Since 2018, the first Mac models are made of recycled aluminum. Apple has developed a special alloy for this purpose and can therefore reuse only the aluminum from its own devices in this way, as the group announced in the spring. Apple's stated goal is to produce iPhones in the future from 100% recycled raw materials.
