The 3rd generation iPad Air manufactured between March 2019 and October 2019 can display a blank screen after flickering or brief lighting. The problems that Apple has confirmed do not occur in all models from the period mentioned. Apple has now started a service program for troubleshooting.
The usual procedures for solving problems are available via an authorized Apple service provider, an appointment in the Apple Store or contacting Apple Support. The company recommends making a backup of the affected device beforehand. This could be a problem without a working display, unless you have the option of a local backup on a PC.
Service program covered in the warranty period
For a local backup, the iPad Air 3 (from € 494.10) was ideally already connected to a PC beforehand if the code could no longer be entered on the iPad. Apple does not describe in detail how exactly the problem presents itself.
Apple points out that the service program only covers affected devices after the first sale within two years. However, this should not be a problem for the manufacturing period between March 2019 and October 2019. How Apple will deal with empty displays of the third iPad Air from March 2021 will be shown.
Possible additional costs
In its communication, the company explainsthat "the standard warranty is not extended", consumer protection laws remain unaffected. If an affected iPad Air already shows other damages, for example a cracked display, these must be repaired before the actual repair, provided that they prevent the service repair from being carried out. In some cases, this can lead to additional costs for the otherwise free service repair.
