The decision was made after an almost six-hour session attended by the 26 representatives of key telecommunications operators from around the world who make up the GSMA governing body.

"We will continue to work with local authorities to help us with the Mobile World Congress 2021 and future issues.", emphasized the GSMA.

More and more large exhibitors canceled their trade fair presence on Tuesday and Wednesday, including Deutsche Telekom, Orange, Vodafone, Nokia, Cisco, BT and HMD Global, the manufacturer of the Nokia brand smartphones. The major European network operators with a lot of weight in the GSMA had brought the end of the congress with the cancellation, reports the leading Spanish daily El Pais,

The board of the GSMA consists of 26 representatives of the most important telecommunications operators, including Telefónica, AT&T, Verizon, América Móvil, China Mobile, China Telecom and China Unicom.

Health Minister Salvador Illa declined to impose the health emergency, which may force the GSMA to pay the costs because it does not provide insurance cover. Over 100,000 people from 200 countries want to travel to Barcelona to take part in the annual industry fair.
