The developer studio Frontier Development has an extension called Odyssey announced for the space game Elite Dangerous. With the addon, galactic conquerors can leave their spaceship for the first time to walk across planets and moons.
There should be a variety of orders, from the department “Diplomacy and Commerce” up to “deadly stealth missions and large-scale fighting”, announce the developers. Your promise one “almost infinite amount of content” indicates that at least some of the bets are generated procedurally, which often gives a very generic feel.
Coordination with teammates should be decisive in the battles, but also that “Choosing the Right Equipment for Each Mission”. Multi-layered and tactical group battles with infantrymen, ground vehicles and spaceships are planned. What all of this means in concrete terms is not really clear yet.
It is also currently unknown whether the players compete in first-person perspective or control their alter ego from the shoulder camera. The announcement is still very well received in the community: Many players seem to find the idea exciting that they will actually be able to enter planets or moons that have already been driven by the spaceship in the future.
At the same time, Odyssey is reminiscent of Star Citizen, the space game by Chris Roberts, which is now funded by the community with around $ 300 million. At least for the moment, Odyssey does not give the impression that foot soldiers in Elite Dangerous have a similar number of options – visits to space stations, for example, are not planned.
However, at the time of its release, Elite Dangerous offers a much larger space than Star Citizen. In addition, Frontier Development has consistently expanded and improved its space game since 2014 (and without controversial sales of virtual space ships), so that it will certainly continue after Odyssey.
The expansion is expected to be released in early 2021 for Elite Dangerous on Windows PC, MacOS, Xbox One and Playstation 4.
