61 percent of the users surveyed stated that they are generally communicating more than before due to the spread of OTT communication (over-the-top). The use of classic telephony is still significantly more popular than Internet telephony via messenger. For voice telephony, OTT users continue to use mobile phones (75 percent) and landline telephony (59 percent) more frequently and more intensively. Mobile telephony in particular is of great importance to users of messenger services. 74 percent of all OTT users surveyed cannot imagine completely foregoing the use of mobile telephony. The three most popular services are WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger and Instagram.

The basis for the results of the report is a representative consumer survey according to the information. Across Germany, a total of 2,210 people took part in the Federal Network Agency survey. The implementation took place at the end of 2019 in cooperation with the market and opinion research institute Info from Berlin.
