Fridays for Future: Climate protection among 14-22 year olds most important topic

The topic of environmental and climate protection is the most important topic for young people and young adults. In a survey of more than a thousand 14-22 year olds, 45 percent rated this as "very important." In second place came the state of education and questions of social justice, each with 39 percent, according to a survey commissioned by the Federal Ministry for the Environment and the Federal Environment Agency.

According to the youth study of 61 percent, "by far the most important actors in environmental and climate protection" are "each and every one", 50 percent industry and 48 percent the federal government (48 percent). The survey asked for a list of the top three players who can do something for environmental and climate protection, explains the Federal Environment Ministry,

However, the surveyed young people are only slightly satisfied with the achievements of the actors. Twenty-one percent believe that "each and every one of us" does "enough" or "rather enough" for environmental and climate protection. The industry comes to 15 percent and 22 percent of respondents think that the federal government "enough" or "rather enough" for environmental and climate protection. The highest is the satisfaction with the performance of the environmental organizations, where 70 per cent believe they are doing "enough" or "more enough" for environmental protection; However, respondents also believe that the associations have comparatively little influence.

80% of the respondents have already heard of the "Fridays for Future" movement. About a quarter has already participated once and 90 percent want to continue to participate. Almost 50 percent of those who have not yet participated can imagine a future commitment. "Fridays for Future" is especially important because of the importance of the topic for the future, followed by the desire to make a difference. The desire to have "school-free", 6 percent of respondents said.

The overall results of the surveys will be discussed in October and will be published in early 2020 as part of a youth conference. The subject of the study is the investigation of important social and current environmental issues from the point of view of young people.
