And they have almost double the console games – they only came to around $ 15.4 billion. These in turn achieved slightly more than double what the manufacturers earned with augmented reality games and virtual reality headsets and games: around $ 6.3 billion.

Has the numbers Superdata Research determined, a branch of the market research company Nielsen specialized in gaming. Overall, sales of games and the virtual and augmented reality market had worldwide sales of $ 115.7 billion. In addition, there will be around $ 6.5 billion for gaming video content (GVC), for example Let's Plays on video portals such as Twitch, Mixer and Youtube.

The top-selling game in 2019 was, as expected, Epic Games' Fortnite, which brought in around $ 1.8 billion, according to Superdata. In second place is Nexon's Dungeon Fighter Online, which is relatively unknown in Germany, with $ 1.6 billion. Third place goes to Tencent's Honor of Kings with $ 1.6 billion.

Fourth place is Riot Games' League of Legends with $ 1.5 billion. Interesting: According to Superdata, League of Legends has significantly more players than Fortnite. The players of the latter spend an average of more than double on their hobby.

The most commercially successful full-price game is Fifa 19 by Electronic Arts, which is said to have generated around $ 786 million at the checkout and with micro transactions. This is immediately followed by Call of Duty Modern Warfare at around $ 645 million and GTA 5 at $ 595 million.

According to market researchers, sales of games of this kind decreased by around 5 percent to $ 18.9 in 2019 compared to the previous year. The main reason is that fewer high-quality new products came onto the market than in 2018. For 2020, Superdata forecasts that revenues will continue to rise thanks to, among other things, Cyberpunk 2077, The Last of Us 2 and Animal Crossing New Horizons.

There is said to have been a change in the market for VR headsets. In 2018, the largest market share was held by headsets for consoles – which in the end should have been almost exclusively the Playstation VR. In 2018, around 1.8 million devices were sold in this category, compared to only 0.8 million devices in 2019.

Standalone headset sales grew tremendously: from 1.6 million to 2.8 million in 2019. According to Superdata, the Oculus Quest is primarily responsible for this growth.
