iOS 13.1 and iPadOS are here: iPhone bug fixes and many iPad innovations

Just a few days after iOS 13.0 was released, Apple released the first major operating system patch on Tuesday night. iOS 13.1 is said to clean up a lot of problems and deliver features that have been dropped from version 13.0.

New is the possibility to share the estimated time of arrival and the location with the navigation in Apple maps with third parties. Users are also able to use the update to automate shortcuts from the now pre-installed Apple app shortcuts to automatically run them at about a certain time of the day. On iPhone XR, XS and XS Max, Apple iOS 13.1 uses performance management to throttle the device when the battery is low. In business use, it is possible to separate private and business data on iOS 13 devices. On iPhone 11 and iPhone 11 Pro (Max), the update also unlocks Apple's new ultra-wideband chip (U1).

iOS 13.0 brought a number of bugs and issues, with developers worried about loss of functionality through Apple's new privacy practices. According to Apple's leaflet, version 13.1 fixes numerous bugs, including serious email retrieval problems in Apple Mail.

With iOS 13.1 Apple delivers the new operating system also for the iPod touch (only seventh generation) as well as iPads under the new name "iPadOS". The update is available for download from iPad 5, iPad Air 2 and iPad mini 4 and for every iPad Pro.

iPadOS includes the new features of iOS 13 – including the dark mode – and extends the tablet for crucial, long-lacking features: ranging from multi-window support for apps on new text editing gestures to support external storage media: On hard drives and USB Sticks can be accessed with Apple's Files app, even to SMB servers can connect.

iPadOS also includes a special version of the Safari browser, which promises full web access at the desktop level. This includes support for sophisticated web apps such as Google Docs. Even a download manager is no longer missing the browser, it can also be found on the iPhone.

iPadOS brings new features especially for iPads, so you can, for example, display widgets directly on the homescreen.

The new iPad home screen offers space for more apps and can permanently display widgets. For the first time iOS 13 also allows a system-wide operation via mouse – albeit with restrictions.

Fundamental changes to Apple's cloud drive iCloud Drive are also missing in iOS 13.1. The announced release option for folders and a selective download option for files should follow "later in the fall" according to the manufacturer. Even a parental control function, with which the messaging can be limited to specific call partners, should be supplemented with iOS 13.2, as well as the ability to read new text messages from the AirPods.
