The Gigafactory is coming: On Friday afternoon (December 20, 2019), the State of Brandenburg and the US electric car manufacturer Tesla agreed on the contract to buy a property. This is where Tesla plans to build its first Gigafactory in Europe.
The 300 hectare property belongs to the State of Brandenburg. It is located in a commercial area near Grünheide in the Oder-Spree district, southeast of Berlin. In addition, Tesla submitted the application documents for the approval process under the Federal Immission Control Act, said the Brandenburg state government. This means that decisive progress has also been made on the second central topic.
"The Tesla sales contract is in place"Finance Minister Katrin Lange (SPD) said. Both sides can still look through the draft contract. In addition, Tesla's board of directors must agree.
The conclusion of the contract is a success for the still young red-black-green state government, which has been in office since the end of November. "It is very good that the first two important steps have now been taken". said Prime Minister Dietmar Woidke (SPD). "I am pleased that the agreements made on Tuesday in the task force were met by everyone involved. That makes me confident for the future. But there is still a lot to be done."
Tesla boss Elon Musk announced the construction of the Gigafactory 4 on the outskirts of Berlin in November. Previously, locations in the Emsland had been discussed.
Construction is scheduled to begin in the first half of next year. The first Model Y electric cars are to roll off the assembly line in 2021. Later Tesla also wants to build the Model 3 in Grünheide. Up to 8,000 jobs are to be created there.
