Access to computers is necessary to participate in digitization – the corona crisis clearly demonstrates this, as lessons, learning and games currently have to take place at home. However, not every household is technically equipped for the digital full supply of all relatives, a problem for some families even beyond lockdown.
As part of the "Roberta4Home" initiative, the Fraunhofer Institute for Intelligent Analysis and Information Systems (IAIS), together with the KI.NRW competence platform in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia, supports children in teaching and learning within their own four walls. The IAIS gives away 2000 Calliope mini computer to interested families and primary school teachers. Participants have access to the "Open Roberta" platform, where they can learn to program. The initiative is under the patronage of Andreas Pinkwart, Minister for Economy, Innovation, Digitization and Energy of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia.
Programming for the environment and space
Parents or primary school teachers from NRW can apply together with their primary school children from the second class onwards, and virtual teams can also participate. Interested parties consider what they want to program at home, at school, in nature or for space. You can submit the ideas online as videos, photos, drawings or in text form.
The campaign is limited to the state of North Rhine-Westphalia and ties in with the "Code4Space" elementary school competition, in which children from Germany, Austria and Switzerland develop programming experiments for use in space.
First come, first code
The open source programming platform "Roberta" from the Fraunhofer Institute is designed to give children an easy start in programming. The first 2000 entries are sent home with a Calliope mini. For There is an application form for application. The Eligibility requirements can be found in the Roberta initiative remove. According to the website, the "Roberta4Home" program is looking for other supporters who would like to promote this and similar activities.
