Since the end of 2019, US users of Windows 10 have been forced to set up a Microsoft account when installing the operating system in the "out of the box" phase of the setup. Now this "constraint" has also reached German users of the Home Edition: the previously available choice between a local offline account and a Microsoft online account is no longer available, and the user can only create a Microsoft account. In autumn 2019, this innovation initially plagued US users of the Insider Previews and later also users of regular Windows 10 versions.
Clicked in a circle
heise online was able to do this on a Windows 10 Home with setup media at both patch level 18363.418 and patch level 18363.592. The "offline account" option is simply no longer available. If the user clicks on the "Back" button with the arrow in the upper left corner, this always leads to the login page. On the other hand, if the user selects the "More information" button, only an information page is displayed.
There the user is informed about the "advantages" of a Microsoft account. It also says, "If you prefer not to associate a Microsoft account with your device, you can remove it." Microsoft even explains how removing the (possibly unwanted) account works.
Trick the setup
The compulsion to create a Microsoft account when setting up the Windows 10 November 2019 Update in the Home Edition can be easily avoided. The trick known from Windows 8 to cut the Internet connection during setup also helps here. The option to create an offline account is available again if you simply pull out the plug of the LAN cable or select the option "I have no Internet" when registering for WLAN.
If you can't easily access the computer's LAN cable, you can press Shift + F10 in the "Out of the Box" phase of the setup. Then the command prompt window appears and the command
opens the "Network Connections" window, in which the network connection can be deactivated by right-clicking.
After that, all you have to do is click the "Back" button in the upper left corner and wait until the setup page for the user account is displayed again. Without an internet connection, the setup in the "out of the box" phase has no chance of setting up a new Microsoft account. Consequently, the setup wizard falls back on the forms for creating a local user account.
And there is a second trick: If a user intentionally enters the password incorrectly ten times, the setup wizard also allows the user to use an offline account.
Windows 10 Pro is exempt
It was initially unclear whether the change also affects users of Windows 10 Pro. The editors also tested the installation process with this edition and can give the all-clear: the user still has a choice there. So nothing has changed for Windows 10 Pro users – enterprise environment administrators who install Windows 10 Enterprise are not affected anyway.
