UPS Flight Forward: First commercial drone airline in the US

UPS subsidiary UPS Flight Forward is the first commercial drone airline in the United States. It has received the country's first unrestricted cargo transportation flight license from the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), which may also be performed at night and out of sight of the pilot. There is no limit on the amount of cargo or number of aircraft drones, pilots or flights.

Flight Forward received the license on Friday and carried out the first commercial drone cargo flight on the same day, in the area of a hospital. In this area, the company sees its first market: flights within hospital areas across the country, for example, to carry blood and tissue samples or medicines.

The first flight was carried out by the UPS subsidiary with a model M2 drone from Matternet. The drone carrier wants to get into business with other manufacturers. In addition, she is looking for other sectors that need fast freight transport within closed areas. For the detection of air obstacles, such as other drones, Flight Forward installs sensors on the ground. Therefore, for the time being, it does not plan any flights over public land.
